Esalen Institute

My work, in its largest sense, seeks to promote our appreciation of this world's miraculous nature and its innate, ever-evolving potential. Speak For The Trees resonates deeply with my aspiration.

-Michael Murphy
Co-founder of the Esalen Institute

The Esalen Institute was founded in 1962 as an alternative educational center devoted to the exploration of what Aldous Huxley called the "human potential," the world of unrealized human capacities that lies beyond the imagination. Esalen soon became known for its blend of East/West philosophies, its experiential/didactic workshops, the steady influx of philosophers, psychologists, artists, and religious thinkers, and its breathtaking grounds blessed with natural hot springs. Once home to a Native American tribe known as the Essalen, Esalen is situated on 27 acres of spectacular Big Sur coastline with the Santa Lucia Mountains rising sharply behind.

Findhorn Foundation

If ever there was a time in our evolution of consciousness it is now. The ground is prepared for this planting.

-Dorothy Maclean
Co-founder of the Findhorn Foundation

The Findhorn Community was begun in 1962 by Peter and Eileen Caddy and Dorothy Maclean. The Findhorn Foundation and community aims to inspire and encourage transformation in human consciousness, to help create a positive future for humanity and our planet. We are an education centre, community and ecovillage, offering experiential education and an holistic leadership curriculum. Based on practices which recognise the interconnectedness of all life, our community life and educational programmes stimulate a more inclusive awareness, leading to sustainable choices for individuals, and for humanity as a whole.
